Breathe a Little Easier: Air Purifiers for Allergies

With the emphasis today on air quality, isn’t it refreshing to know that an air purifier for allergies can make your family breathe easier? I don’t have allergies, but my grandson does. Pretty badly, in fact. He’s allergic to everything you can think of, from dogs to dust mites to pollen. And when he gets sick, he gets really, really sick. So I decided I needed to buy him an air purifier for his room.

The problem came when I started looking around purifier and discovered everybody and his brother made them, and they all claimed theirs was the best. Of course. So I had to do my homework, and here’s what I found out.

To do the job properly and really scrub the air, an air purifier for allergies needs to fully exchange it between four and six times each hour. That means that all the air passes through the HEPA filter, cleaning all the allergens and contaminants and putting clean air back in the room. The size of the purifier needs to correspond to the size of the room in which you are using it. Since my grandson’s room is not very large, I could have gotten away with a little smaller machine; but I didn’t, and this is why. If I opt for a little larger than necessary air purifier, I can run it at lower speeds, which not only is quieter, but allows the air to “linger” a little longer in the filter, allowing any gas molecules to be trapped more effectively in the activated carbon.

An efficient air purifier will remove 90% of the contaminants in the air with each pass, and will continue to do so until the filter needs to be replaced. In fact, a machine that includes a pre-filter will extend the life of the HEPA filter by catching the larger particulates before they can even reach it. Of course, a filter indicator light is necessary to know when to change the filter. I prefer an easy to change filter, preferably just snapping in and out, without having to unscrew parts to remove it.

One thing I definitely wanted was to be sure that any air purifier I bought did not emit ozone or gas, which is an awful irritant even to those without allergies.

Lastly, I wanted to be sure that the machine could easily be moved from one room to another, which is why I insisted that it be on casters. Now I can breathe easier knowing my grandson has the best air purifier for allergies to protect his precious lungs!
